Learning a simple way to use an FTP program.

Here's something I bet we've all thought at one time or another. "I've learned to use an online site builder but I don't like the way they upload things. I wish I could just select all the files and tell them where to go". No pun meant there.

Ok let's start with what you will need. There are a lot of different ftp programs out there. The two most common are Cute_FTP and WS_FTP. I'll be showing you with WS_FTP and the differences are so minor you can figure out the other without much problem. The best place I know to download WS_FTP is CNET.
Just do a search for ftp and you'll find it.

Alright first thing you'll have to do is install the program. Once finished you should have three pieces of information. Host name, username and password. An example of a hostname would be username.nitemyste.com or ftp.geocities.com.

STEP #1

The first screen you will see will be your configured sites. From here you will click new.

If you have more then one site you may want to create a folder to keep them all in. If not this is where you will create a name for your site. Just a name for you, it will not show up online.

STEP #2

Now you will be given a screen to enter your hostname.

I bet you can guess by this picture what you enter now.

So you have just finished setting up the information for your site. Now you will connect to the net and click on the title for your site. Click connect and watch the bottom of the window. You will know when your connected because it makes a sound to let you know.

The last thing I with try and explain is how  to move files.

Once you are logged in this is the screen you will see. The files on the left are the files on your system. The files on the right are the ones on your site. When you want to upload files just click on the ones you want (hold down Ctrl to select more them one file). Once you have the files selected you wish to upload you will have to click the button in the center of the two windows that points to the right window. If you wish to down load just do the reverse. Once you have uploaded files and you are finished just hit the disconnect button and close the program.
