The Descendants of Peter Scherer & Catharina Blees
Peter Scherer, born between 1755 and1765. He married Catharina Blees in Thailen, Saarland, Prussia. Catharina Blees was born between 1755 and 1765 in Thailen, Saarland.
Children of Peter SCHERER and Catharina BLEES:
1. Claudius, born 1782 in Weiskirchen, Saarland, Prussia; died about 1860 in Mequon, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin; married Catherine BACKES 4 December 1809 in Weiskirchen, Saarland, Prussia. She was the daughter of Johann BACKES and Gertrud LAUER.
2. Christian SCHERER was born 1810 (per 1880 census Prussia), died about or after 1868, but before 1880 (Ozaukee County). Christian married Helene THIENNES (a.k.a. Helena, Helen, and a.k.a THUNNES, TINES), born 28 December 1817 (per 1880 census
1812 in Prussia), died 25 July 1894 per St. James Cemetery (Catholic cemetery). Per 1910 census, had 6 children with 5 living.
Notes on Christian Scherer by Betty Petzko (Betty was a 1st cousin of Robert Arthur Scherr, and both were great-great-grandchildren of Christian and Helene):
"There is a Claudius Scherer branch in Ozaukee County. They appear to be Catholic. Could be a cousin of Christian, however, relationship not established. Also, another branch of Scherers in Washington County.
Christian purchased 80 acres of land on 31 July 1840 for $100 from the United States. On 16 December 1867, he sold it to Edward. Described as E 1/2NE 1/4 26-9-21.
More notes on Christian Scherer:
The 1860 census shows Family #896: Scherer, Christian, age 50, a farmer; his wife, Helena, age 48; Helen, age 18, Edward, age 16; Mathias, age 10; Henrich, age 8; Nicolaus, age 6 and Peter, age 4. NOTE: In the 1850 census it shows Helen born in Wisconsin and in the 1860 census it shows she was born in Prussia.
Notes on Helene Thiennes:
There is no death certificate in either Milwaukee or Ozaukee Counties for Helene. She is buried in St. James Cemetery, which is a Catholic cemetery. All the rest of her family was Lutheran. Due to confusion caused by early illiteracy and language barriers, she could be the daughter of John Henry Thien, the founder of Thiensville. John Henry Thien came to Mequon, Wisconsin, in 1842 from Germany. His first wife died sometime between 1842 and 1850, he then married his second wife. Nothing specific has been found to tie Helene Thiennes to John Henry Thien."
