Second Generation

2.  Claudius SCHERER (Peter), born 1782 in Weiskirchen, Saarland, Prussia; died after 1860 in Mequon, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin; married 4 December 1809 in Weiskirchen, Saarland, Prussia to Catherine BACKES (she was the daughter of Johann BACKES and Gertrud LAUER. 

Notes for Claudius Scherer:

Claud SCHERER was a witness on 11 February at the marriage of Mathias BARTH and Elisabeth BACKES.  Marriage record FHC #558662, page 56, records of St. Jacob's Catholic Church in Weiskirchen, Saarland. 

Notes for Catherine BACKES:

Catherine Backes was born circa 1789 in Weiskirchen, Saarland.  She died on 7 July 1858.  The death record from St. James (Mequon, WI), p. 245,  shows that she was 79 years old and the wife of SCHERER.

The marriage record from St. Jacobs shows Claude, son of Peter and Catharina BLEES of Thailen, married Catharina BACKES, daughter of Johann BACKES and Gertrud LAUER of Thailen.  The witnesses were Johann BACKES and Nicolas BARTH of Thailen.  Page 143.

Children of Claudius Scherer and Catherine Backes:

i.  Mathias, born 23 February 1819.  Death record from St. Jacob's Catholic Church, Weiskirchen, page 20 shows he was one day old. 

ii.  Mathias, baptized 30 June 1829 in St. Jakob's Weiskirchen, Merzig, Rhine Province; married Elizabeth BACKES.  His Godparents were Mathias BART of Thailen and Margaretha STURM of Thailen.  St. Jakobs records, page 230.  Mathias bought 40 acres in Sec. 25 TWP 11 north of range 18E on 8 January 1849.  Doc #27905.  He married Elizabeth BACKES (baptized 4 November 1836 in St. Jakob's, Weiskirchen, daughter of Peter BACKES and Margaretha HENS, before 1857.  

The two known children of Mathias SCHERER and Elizabeth BACKES:

i.  Peter, baptized on 20 August 1855 in St. James Catholic Church, Mequon, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin.  His Godparents were Peter HUEBSCHEN and Maria BACKES.  

ii.  Margaret, baptized on 31 July 1857 in St. James;  her Godparents were John BACKES and Margaret SCHERER.  St. James records, p. 24.  Margaret was Godmother in October 1862 for James BECKER, the son of Nicolaus BECKER and Elizabeth BARTH.

ii.  Maria, born February 1831 in Weiskerchen, Saarland, Prussia; died 14 October 1831 in Weiskirchen, Saarland, Prussia.  Death record from St. Jacob's Catholic Church, Weiskirchen, page 54, shows she was 9 months old.

iii.  Claudius, born between 1830 and 1834 in Weiskirchen, Saarland,  Prussia; died after 1890 in Wisconsin.  He married Margaret BARTH, daughter of Claudius BARTH and Katharina, on 9 October 1854 in St. James Catholic Church.  St. James records show their witnesses were Joannes BARTH and Aloysius BUCHLER (?).  On 29 August 1953, Claudius and his wife Margaretha sold land to Claudius BARTH in Sec 25 Twp 9 R21 for $18.00  The 1855 Wisconsin census shows Claudius Scherer with a family of 2 males and 3 females.  On 30 October 1865, Claudius and Margaretha bought 13 acres for $800 in Sec 30, Twp9, North of Range 22E.  Vol. 16, P. 628.  On 15 December 1854 they sold it to Michael MAUS for $800.  In the 1870 Wisconsin census, the family is listed as:  Scherer, Claudius, age 37, a farmer; his wife, Margaret, age 33; Anton, age 15; Mathias, age 13; Elizabeth, age 11; Margaret, age 7, and Claudius, age 5.  Also living with them is Margareta Scherer, age 46 and Claudius Scherer, age 78.  They are living on a farm northeast of Mathew and Clara BARTH.  The 1880 Wisconsin census shows the family:  Claudius, age 45, a farmer; his wife, Margaret, age 43; Anton, age 25; Mathias, age 23; Margaret, age 17; Claudius, age 15; Susan, age 12; Mathilda, age 11; Peter, age 8; John, age 6; and Michael, age 2.  A Margaret SCHERER, age 65, listed as "mother-in-law" living with Claudius and Margaret.  He died after 1890.  Margaret BARTH was born circa 1836.  She died after 1890. 

iv.  Mathias, born 30 June 1829 in Thailen, Saarland, Prussia.  His Godparents were Mathias BARTH of Thailen and Margaretha STURM of Thailen.  St. Jakobs records, page 230.  

 

Third Generation

8.  Claudius (Claudius, Peter) was born 1830-1834 in Weiskerchen, Saarland, Prussia, and died after 1890 in Wisconsin.  He married Margaret BARTH 9 October 1854 in St. James Catholic Church, Mequon, Wisconsin.  She was the daughter of Claudius BARTH and Katharina. 

Children of Claudius SCHERER and Margaret BARTH:

i.  Anton, born 10 June 1855 in Mequon, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin.  He married Wilhelmina MEYER 5 February 1883 in St. James, Mequon, Wisconsin.  His Godparents were Anthony BARTH and Margaret SCHERER.  The records of St. James indicate that she was a Protestant.  The witnesses at their marriage were Nicolaus BECKER and Mathias SCHERER.

ii.  Mathias A., born 1 December 1856 in Mequon, Ozaukee, County, Wisconsin; died after 1905.  He married Caroline LIMACHER.

iii.  Margaret, baptized 31 July 1857 in Mequon, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin.  Her Godparents were John BACKES and Margaret SCHERER.

iv.  Elizabeth, born 26 October 1858 in Mequon, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin.  Her Godparents were Elizabeth BARTH and Mathias BARTH.

v.  Peter, born 31 December 1860 in Mequon, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin; died 20 February 1862 in Mequon, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin.  Birth and death records St. James Catholic Church, Mequon, Wisconsin.

vi.  Claudius, born 19 March 1865 in Mequon, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin.  He married Agatha LIMACHER 10 July 1888 in St. James, Mequon, Wisconsin.  His Godparents were Claudius BARTH and Helena SCHERER.

vii.  Susan, born 6 December 1866 in Mequon, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin.

viii.  Mathilda, born about 1869 in Mequon, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin.

ix.  Barbara, born 30 May 1871 in Mequon, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin; died 25 August 1871 in Mequon, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin. 

x.  Peter, born 24 June 1872 in Mequon, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin.  His Godparents were Peter BACKES and Magdalena MUSEL (her parents are listed as Claudi SCHERER and Helene BARTH [why Helene?]  Baptized: 24 June 1872, St. James Catholic Church, Mequon, Wisconsin. 

xi.  John, born 14 February 1873, Mequon, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin.

xii.  Catherine, born 18 January 1877 in Mequon, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin.

xiii.  Michael, born 8 April 1878 in Mequon, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin.

xiv.  Jacob, born 26 April 1881 in Mequon, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin; died 22 February 1885 in Mequon, Wisconsin.  St. James death records show he was 4 years old and buried there on 24 February 1885.
