Comments: Dear Lionel I am researching my ancestors in Gibraltar. My grandmother, Sarah, was born in Gibraltar in 1897. Her parents were John MacCoubrey (b.1851 Scotland, d.1901 Gibraltar) and Maria Dolores Cesaria Martin MacCoubrey (b.1864 Spain or Gibraltar, d. La Plata, Argentina) her mother's maiden name was LEON from Spain. Their marriage took place at St Mary the Crowned 8th July 1900. I know that Sarah was their daughter and that there were other children, mostly boys who were older than Sarah, there were at least two, Hugo and Alex (Alec, Alexander). After John MacCoubrey died, Maria Dolores moved to Buenos Aires with her children. I have been unable to locate documentation of the births in Gibraltar. Anyone who has any connection with this family please contact me at janetbento@apuainet.ag. Look forward to hearing from you. Janet

Comments: Hi Lionel, I'm reseaching my Great, Great, Great Grandmother who was an inhabitant of Gibralter in 1828. I'm attaching a copy of the marriage certificate of Staff Serjant John Bilkey 12 Nov 1798 Cornwall, England and Jessamine Mincham (c. 1809?) as they were married on 21 Jan 1828. I've seen that an Elizabeth Jane Bilkey and Nancy Bilkey were born on the Ionian Islands/Malta/Corfu in the 1818-1864 timeframe, but don't know if there is a relationship there. John Bilkey and Jessamine Mincham had a daughter Jane Charlotte Bilkey born on 3 Jan 1828 and baptised on 21 Jan 1828 likely by the same person that performed the wedding. I show 9 children by this couple and at least 8 were daughters. Regards, Bill Bilkey

He married Eliza Warne born 1819 in Hampshire and they married in St. Helier Jersey on 16th August 1840 she died in London 1878 and Stephen died in London 1887. Stephen's parents were Richard John Day born 29th March 1786 and baptised 13th April 1789 in Gibraltar and he married a girl named Elizabeth born in Ireland c1791. Comments: Hi Lionel Lovely to hear from you .... I managed to get hold of Alfred a couple of months ago now and he has been kind enough to search the records and has confirmed that Arthur is in the North Front Cemetery - which is wonderful news! Alfred advised that his date of burial 28 May 1881, burial number 3765 religion C of E ... but he is still searching for a headstone. I really hope there is one. I am now trying to arrange my wedding in Gib next May (w/c 31st) - at the Caleta - so if I haven't been there before then, then I shall definitely try and find Arthur during that week. This has all come about thanks to Arthur! I was looking at hotels to stay in for a visit and then saw wedding packages, and thought I could kill 2 birds with 1 stone here It is quite possible I will be the first member of the family to actually pay respects in person to his grave. I have always been really touched by his story. Can you imagine how his poor mother felt on receiving the letter telling her that her son had passed away, and had been buried thousands of miles away. It feels right that another "Triggs" should visit him. We have copies of letters sent from his shipmates and Captain to his mother back in England which is why we know so much of what happened. My Uncle also has his medals. If you like I will email them over to you to read... Thanks again for your interest! Kind Regards Nicky

Tuesday, November 02, 2010

Hi Nicky, Sorry for the delay in replying. Your story though sad, but one of the most interesting that I have come across. The North Front Cemetery Gibraltar would be the most likely cemetery to look for his grave. There are phone numbers to reach the cemetery, however, you might not get a search respond, unfortunately. (Gibraltar Cemetery, Mr. Alfred Ryan Records Superintendent. Tel Gib Int. Code 350+200 North Front Cemetery Superintendent of Cemeteries 78491, Cemetery Keeper North Front 77279, Fax Number 52691 ) But, if you decide to visit Gib, my best suggestion would be to call the cemetery’s office and arrange to go there, once you are there the supervisor is very helpful and he will find the plot for you. The North Front Cemetery is divided into several sections. In those days if the religion of the deceased was not known, it is more than likely that he could be burried anywhere. Military and Naval personnel where very much scattered all over the place. There is a very large section which is all protestant and well marked. I come from Gibraltar but now I live in the USA. I visit Gib every year around May. I will not promise to you that I’ll find what you are looking for. However, if during one of my visits to the cemetery I get a chance to help you out I’ll do that. Please let me know if you find his grave. Best Wishes, Lionel

Hi Lionel Not sure if you can help me or not.... Long shot here - .... I'm researching my family Triggs tree. My Great great Uncle Arthur Triggs joined the Navy, and became a torpedo instructor...He was born in 30th September 1855. He was stationed on HMS Minotaur off Gibraltar in 1881 when he went ashore to buy presents with 2 other shipmates. They were attacked and robbed and a fight ensued. Arthur took to the water where he was stoned, in an attempt to swim back to the ship, without success..and was in the water for an hour and a half. On return to the shore he was arrested and put in a cell for the night with no bed, cold and wet. Next day he was released to his Officers. He was taken back to the ship and treated by the ships doctor, but his condition worsened and was then transferred to the hospital in Gibralter where he died. He had previously been awarded medals for bravery (Bronze medal from the Royal Humane Society in 1876 and Lloyds Bronze medal 1881). He was given a heroes send off through the streets of Gibralter, his coffin draped in the Union Jack ..drawn for 3 miles ..followed by 150 of the ships company as well as the officers and the captain. He was was buried in Gibraltar ....but I have no idea where - or how to find out where? I would love it if he was still in a cemetary that I could go and visit... Do you have any idea how I could find this out? He died 29th May 1881. Appreciate any help! x Kind Regards Nicky Bloss (nee Triggs)

Comments: Hi, I am trying to find more information on my 2nd great grandparents. HENRY JONES and ELLEN SHERWILL. I searched the LDS film for Cathedral of St. Mary the Crowned Catholic Church and located their marriage. 17th January 1878 HENRICUS JONES Age 23 born Belgaum, East Indies to HELENA SHERWILL Age 25 born Gibraltar. HENRYS’ parents being GUILLERMUS (WILLIAM) JONES and MARIA O’CONNER and ELLENS’ parents being PETRUS SHERWILL and ANGELA GRACINI. Henry was serving in the 1st 4th Kings Own Royal Regiment at the time, they had their first child ALFRED 1878/1879 born possibly in Gibraltar, then MARY who was born 15 April 1880 in Jamaica, then Louisa born approx. 1882 in Gibraltar, then 3 more children all born in England. I have not been able to trace the births for both ALFRED OR LOUISA and I have been never been able to progress either of the JONES/O’CONNER, SHERWILL/GRACINI lines further back and would love to hear from anyone who could maybe suggest a route I could take or alternatively I would also love to hear from anyone who may have the same ancestors within their tree. Lastly could anyone please advise if GRACINI is a native Gibraltar name and if not where GRACINI may have originated from. Thanks Sharon

Comments: The Ryan Family Thank you very much for publishing my letter. Thanks to your communication service I was answered positively by one of our family RYAN'S CLAN member. I do wish if some other Ryan family members, or Bozano's, related to Ernest Aurelius Ryan family and to Alfred (Lucio Ryan) well known as a ship factory owner - best known in Argentina as President of Compañia Argentina de Pesca, (an English Company) whose business was engaged in whale hunting 50 years ago - was related to the family or if they know our origins - with origins I mean who was the first Ryan who arrived to Gibraltar, which year etc. I have heard there are other Ryan's which actually have something to do with shipping in Gibraltar - I do also know that there is another Henry Ryan in Gibraltar, or that their descendants are still living in Gibraltar - This Henry Ryan worked with my family in Argentina, he came in one of the ships owned by Lucio Ryan - afterwards lived in the Province of Mendoza and left Argentina - back to Gibraltar. Let me tell you another thing which is connected to Argentine history, which I would like to investigate, this is that I have read that Gral José de San Martin, well known in America as the hero of liberation, together with Simon Bolivar, both well known for liberating the River Plate Provinces from the Spaniards, was captured during Napoleonic Wars and imprisoned in Gibraltar under the English Government - if there is anyone who loves history, and can tell me were I can find these documents, I would be very grateful. Nearly all my relatives have traveled to Gibraltar, one of my sisters was there four years ago, and was very proud of our Rock of Gibraltar! And this is for Ripley's book: Brother Ryan (not our relative) was my father's teacher in Gibraltar around 1910-13 - he was a member of the Christian Brothers Congregation, there is a very famous school for boys in Argentina called Cardinal Newman where nearly all my cousins attended, and believe it or not he was their teacher too - after some years they sent him to Uruguay - and died there. It was a real pity - my father had no sons! I hope to visit Gibraltar as soon as I can, thanks again. Sincerely yours, Lizzie Ryan.

Also my daughter got married there in 2008. My name is Susan Bullas and i am in Birmingham West Midlands. I have found that my great Uncle Thomas Frederick BENNETT was based in Gibraltar, definitely between 1859 and 1861, as 2 of his children were born there:- Dora E born 1859, and Charles B born 1861. He was in Lancaster in 1863 when his third child was born. In the 1871 census, he is listed as being a Sergeant Instructor, so I assume that he was in the British forces. Comments: Hi Lionel, I don’t know if anybody can help, but I am trying to find out more about my Great Great Grand Father Moritz Frederick Relle who lived in Gibraltar from I would think 1866 to his death in April 1879. He lived in Schomberg Cottage on the North front. He married Emily Woods whose father was Mr Woods of the Port Office. He is in the 1878 census with his wife and 6 children. He is described as a Professor (presumably Music)His death was recorded in the Chronicle as follows “DEAD MUSICIAN It is with great pain that we record the death of Mr Relle, teacher of music who died at North Front after an illness of two or three weeks. Mr Relle, who was formerly Band Master of the 23rd Regiment, has for many years lived at the North Front during which time he has been employed in giving lessons in music, and in the course of which he has won the respect and esteem of all with whom he came into contact besides the grief it will be to his family and friends the death of Mr Relle will be the cause of a serious public loss for it will be impossible to find in Gibraltar anyone gifted with the knowledge and love of music which he possessed. Mr Relle leaves a widow (the daughter of Mr Woods of the Port Office) and his children to mourn the loss of a loved husband and affectionate father.” I know Moritz was born in Prussia in 1834 but where I do not know or who his parents were Anything would help Kind regards, John

Comments: Hi Lionel. Not sure if you can help me or not....

Comments: Hi, I am really hoping you will be able to help me. I am trying to trace a Military Marriage that took place in Gibraltar. The groom was Joseph Wilson born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1833. He joined the Army and was part of the 55TH regiment. His bride was Caroline who is listed in the later English Census as being a Gibraltian British subject. I don’t have her maiden name, this is partly what I hope to discover by finding the marriage cert. I have managed to located Joseph's discharge papers so know that he arrive c 1856 and their 1st child Margaret Wilson was born in Gibraltar in 1857. So I assume that the marriage took place either late 1856 or 1857. Where can I find the information I need? Many thanks.

Comments: Hi Lionel I'm really hoping that you can help me! I'm researching my family history and have discovered that my 4 times Great Grandfather was born in Gibraltar in 1811. This is very interesting to our whole family as, coincidentally, we lived in Gib for three years from 1983 to 1986 and I attended St Christophers School whilst there. My GGGG Grandfather's name was Francis De Sousa. I've discovered from his death certificate that his parents names are Joseph and Maria Louisa. Joseph's occupation is listed as a stonemason. Francis ended up in Scotland, which is where my family now lives, arriving here sometime between 1811 and 1839 (his marriage date in East Lothian). Any information that you are able to provide would be greatly appreciated (does Francis have any siblings; how did the family arrive in Gibraltar; when / why did Francis leave Gibraltar for Scotland). I've tried finding out the names of ships departing Gib for Scotland but have had no luck so far!

Comments: Hi Lionel, I seemed to have hit a brick wall with research into my IRWIN ancestors. I have trying to track down my Great Grandfather born abt 1842. I cannot find anything about him, THOMAS IRWIN until 1881 household census where he is an unmarried army pensioner loging in Surrey, born Gibralter (British Subject). On his marriage certificate he states he is a Labourer(1881). 1891 Census states he is a Labourer born Gibralter. 1901 Census states he is a Labourer born Gibralter, but then the 1911 Census states he is again and army pensioner born County of Cork Ireland. He died in 1916 aged 74 in Surrey, therefore confirms he was born in 1842. I am at a loss as to what to do next. If he was born in Gibralter, could that mean that his Dad was in the Navy? Any pointers as to what I can do next would be much appreciated. One of his chilldren's married certificates states his name as THOMAS CHARLES IRWIN, and on his marraige certificate it shows his Father as THOMAS IRWIN. Any advice would really be appreciated, it's driving me mad, I don't know whether to look for his birth in Gibralter/Ireland or even the UK. Many thanks, Allison Middlesex, UK

I have a portrait of him in 1781 as a Bengal Lancer, but know nothing further until his three children were born in Gibraltar: Edward Cook 20 Nov 1800, Sarah Jane 1802, Elizabeth Ann 1803. I am trying to find out who he married. In 1811 he married again in England, so presumably his first wife died, maybe in Gibraltar. He then lived in Surrey in England and died there in 1837. His son Edward Cook Archbold was also in the Indian army but, I think, was still connected with the Gibraltar firm. I would be very grateful for any information about him,his wife and maybe other children. Thanks.

Comments: wonder whether you can help... An ancestor of mine, Thomas Fowke, had connections with Gibraltar in the 1700s and then in 1754, his son Thomas was recorded as having been christened at St Botolph's Church in Bishopsgate in the City of London, England. However I cannot find a record of his marriage to Mary (surname unknown), in any English records, nor can I find any record of any other children being christened. Might there be any records in Gibraltar please? I assume that the marriage would have taken place between 1700 and 1753, but probably closer to the date of his son's christening in 1754. I look forward to hearing from you Many thanks Richard Fowke

Louisa was born in Gibraltar but her mother (according to family legend) was from a shipwrecked family (Gibraltar 1850 or earlier) that had been travelling from Genoa to make a new life in the USA. Sadly I do not know the Italian surname but apparently some of her brothers joined the British Army whilst others continued to the USA and joined the army there. Their son, Andrew Gonzales, remained a good friend of my grandfather's. They immigrated to New York and William married my grandmother, Hilda Zeilfeldt of Furulund, Sweden. Comments: The Earl of Rothes' Regiment was stationed at Gibraltar in 1737. From this regiment, 240 soldiers and six drummers had been turned over Mr. Oglethorpe's regiment by 23 February 1738 and sailed to the American colony of Georgia, arriving in Savannah 7 May 1738. Several sources show that the Earl of Rothes' Regiment was also known as the 25th Regiment of Foot; Oglethorpe's Regiment was authorized 25 Aug 1737 as the 42nd Regiment of Foot and disbanded in 1748. Note: Oglethorpe's Regiment had no lineal connection with the 42nd Royal Regiment, the Black Watch, which took that number in 1751. Can anyone verify the dates that the Earl of Rothes' (25th Foot) was stationed at Gibraltar? Are there extant muster rolls that will provide the names of these soldiers? Also - I can find no information on that regiment in sources available locally. Can anyone provide details on where and when the regiment was created? The following items found at british-history.ac.uk provide evidence of the transfer of men from Earl of Rothes' Regiment to General Oglethorpe. Dec 1. 1737: Whitehall, Treasury Chambers. Mr. Secretary at War and other officers being present my Lords order a letter to the Secretary at War, desiring him, together with the Paymaster of the Forces, to advise and return their opinion as to the following particulars:-- What orders are proper to be given for turning over the private men from the Earl of Rothes to Mr. Oglethorp’s regiment. What subsistence ought to be paid for Mr. Oglethorp’s men raised here, and how the subsistence, which will be paid to the earl of Rothes men at Gibralter till turned over to Mr. Oglethorpe, will be made good. What levy money is to be allowed Mr. Oglethorpe per man and for how many men, and the method proposed for the same. From what time the Earl of Rothes’ regiment is to be discharged of the men turned over to Mr. Oglethorp, and how the Earl of Rothes is to recruit again, at what allowance per man, and how the charge thereof is to be paid. [Treasury Minute Book XXVIII, pp60-1; Letter Book XIX, p 456] 1738 May 9: 60. Representation to the King from General Oglethorpe, concerning the recruiting fund for his regiment for Georgia. Said regiment was to be formed out of the Independent Company at Georgia, the Earl of Rothes’s regiment at Gibraltar and such others as could be raised to make it up to 600 men. The regiment was complete within a month after recruiting orders were issued, “by which expedition a considerable loss falls on the captains… The fund for raising the said men was the not effective money of 500 men for four months from 25 August to 24 December, which it was thought might produce 6/. A man, but the men being so soon raised and entertained at least five weeks before the 24th December their subsistence has reduced the fund considerably for recruiting.” Petitioner’s agent has received orders to pay over to the Paymaster General so much of the subsistence money as shall have been paid to the drummers and private men taken out of Lord Rothes’ regiment, which from 1737, December 25, to 1737-8, February 23, for six drummers and 240 men amounts to near 400/., “and is a charge too heavy for the captains at present to bear, who have so many necessaries to provide for themselves.” Therefore prays that the said 400/. May be issued out of Army Contingencies by way of levy money. Referred to the Paymaster General of the Forces. [Reference Book X, p.108]

On a recent search of the UK 1911 Census I found that it said that she was born in Gibraltar . I have her birth date as 21 January 1881. I believe her parents were Lucy & William Gibbs (a builder) and that she also had a sister, Pollie. I tried emailing the BD& Marriages of Gibraltar but this was returned. I would appreciate any help you could give me. I have no known relations that could help me on this search. Sincerely, Adrienne Cooper

We think Augustus and Joseph came from Gibraltar, Mabel (Peggy) (born in Birkenhead , UK 1918) and Joseph sailed from Gibraltar to Southampton in 1953 for a visit but stated that their permanent residence was in Gibraltar . They also had a son called Joseph in 1944 (born in Manchester ). I can’t find any further information and would love to know if they or their family are in Gibraltar or if anyone knows of them or their whereabouts. Thanks Mandy Harding

I recently moved to Gibraltar and married Felicity Sardeña, the daughter of your cousin, Alfred Sardeña, the son of Humberto Sardeña, the brother of your mother Laura. Their parents were Alfredus Sardeña (b. 1876) and Rogelia Aldorino (b. 1879) who married on 2/1/1897. Hopefully we can share the information we have to get a larger picture of it all. You’ve mentioned a couple of your mother’s sisters that I didn’t have, so thanks for those. The earliest Sardeña in Gibraltar was a Manuel Joaquin Sardeña originally born in Madeira in about 1785. Since coming to Gibraltar on May 5th, and whilst looking for work I’ve been filling in time by creating the family tree. My surname is Sardina which is a corruption of the name Sardeña I’m six generations from the original Manuel and my wife is seven. We are related by brothers to the original Manuel, about 180 years ago. It’s your cousin’s, Alfred my wife’s dad, 65th birthday in October so I’m getting it ready for that. Thanks Manny

What I'm wondering is if there are cemetery records for the North Front Cemetery, whether there would still be a stone, and whether there is any reasonable way to find out if probate records exist. It was a Wine/Sherry export business - I think. I would be very grateful for any suggestions or help. Thank you. Charlotte

Comments: I am researching Divers that worked on the construction of the Naval Dockyard Extension (1899-1906). I have several names that I am interested in any information relating to: William Robert (Bellenie) Walker, Alfred G. Lickblade or Leekblade, and John Edward Pearce, all were Divers from the UK. I am particular interested in anything to do with William Robert (Bellenie) Walker, he resided at No. 1 Casola Buildings, Naval Hospital Road from 1899-1902. His son Edward was born whilst in Gibraltar (15th Nov 1900), and his wife, Hannah Ellen Bellenie, died (15th Feb 1902) of Remittent Fever. William Walkers sister-in-law, Alice Ellen Cashman, was sent from the UK to Gib to care for the children, but there is a story from the family that several of the children (5 in total), contracted Typhoid Fever or Cholera on their return to the UK, but survived after being nursed by Alice. Walker himself returned to the UK in 1902, his work as Diving Foreman completed. All three of these gentlemen were also Freemason’s, belonging to the following Lodges whilst in Gib: Lodge St Thomas No. 576, Inhabitants Lodge No. 153, St Thomas Royal Arch Chapter No.168, Mark Master Masons No. 43, Grand Lodge of Mark Master Mason – Cockburn Lodge & Robert Freke Gould Lodge No. 2874 Any information would be most appreciated. Grandfather William Errington, b.1800 Gibralter, which he put on all the Census'. His daughter Jane Errington b.1829 married Edward Thomas Sully, b.1825, and although they lived in London, all their children were baptised in Colchester, Essex. I think there must be a link to the Military, as Colchester was/is a Garrison Town, but I know nothing more than this. Can you help me please, or point me in the direction of where I might find out anything else? Regards, Gina Hilton.

Comments: Hello Lionel. My grt.grt.grandfather John Gray b.Ramsbottom, Lancashire c1828 joined the British Army around 1850 and was posted to Gibraltar. He married a Spanish girl, Maria Conception Macari, on the 17th.Jan.1853 in the Kings Chapel, Gibraltar. I have their marriage record from there. They had 3 children all born in Gibrsltar. John in 1854, Elizabeth in 1855 and Mary in 1857. These date obtained from the 1861 English census records. However I cannot find thier birth records. The Kings Capel, now the Garrison Chapel, Gibraltar have no record of them and I have contacted the British overseas record office and the Gibraltan record Office at Joshua Hassan House, Gibratar and niether of them has any record of them. As thier mother was Spanish and probably a Roman Catholic I have emailed the RC Cathedrel Church of St.Mary the Crowned but they have not responded to my enquiry. I am at a loss as to what to do next. Any suggestions would be welcome. Also I have found Maria Conception Macari's Christening in the LDS's. IGI records. She was Christened in the RC Cathedrel Church of St.Mary the Crowned on the 26th.Nov.1834 and her parents are given as Vicenti Macari and Teresa Arellano. I would love to do more research on them. Any suggestions where to start would also be welcome. Regards Martin Gray

I hope that someone can help me. Many thanks. Peter Carter.

Comments: Hello Lionel, I am searching for information about my great Grandmother, Rosalia Payne nee Tavares born Gibraltar born 31st May 1872, married Henry Payne 10th April 1896 in Gibraltar. He was a private in the army service corps aged 27, stationed at Town Range Barracks? She was a spinster aged 22 from Castle Street, Gibraltar. Her father was Adolfo Tavares, a sailor. I have both her birth and marriage certificates. As you can see, she has lost 2 years from her age at the time of her marriage. Her mother was Victoria Olivares Tavares and at the time of Rosalia's birth, they lived on Governors Street. I have noticed that on her birth certificate, which is a copy dated 1st march 1930, the year 1872 has been altered in all 4 places that it appears.I cannot make out what it has been altered from or Why? Rosalia had a sister, Carolina who married Albert Tacon, their son, Willie, was serving as a Gibraltar policeman at the start of the 2nd world war. I have some photographs of the family from about that time. They returned to the UK in about 1900 and had 3 or possibly 4 children. Henry left the army in 1907 and the family lived in Pulham Market, Norfolk. Any help in tracing any of the family names in Gibraltar will be gratefully received. TIA. William was with the Royal Marines and was stationed to Gibraltar shortly after 1907 where he served out his service before becoming a member of the port police in 1920. He died of cancer in 1938 following the death of his son Michael in 1937 of meningitis. What I would like to trace is the family of Agnes Baker. I know that her parents moved to Gibraltar some time between 1896 and 1914, she and William were married in 1918. Her father was Richard Joseph Baker and her mother was Emily Elizabeth Baker (formerly Bussell). They had 3 other children to my knowledge prior to 1891, Richard J, Alfred and Emily, who I believe all went with them and Richard & Alfred were still in Gibraltar in 1938, when my mother left following her fathers death. There are others with the Baker surname at that time who appear to be related to my mother, namely, Acacia Baker, Carlota Baker and Lourdes Baker. But the direct relationship is unknown. I would love to find out more about this arm of my family…….what made Richard take his family to Gibraltar, when did he and Emily die? What happened to his other children and grandchildren? Comments: Hi, I am trying to trace my ancestor, John Campbell Stevenson Brodie who was a British Subject born in Gibraltar in 1842/43. I have no idea why he was born in Gibraltar or how long he lived there for other than the following: His father is listed as John Brodie, Enginner on John CS Brodies marriage certificate. I cant trace John CS Brodie on any English census until 1871, he married in Farnborough in 1865, not sure when he arrived back in England. His father was not listed as deceased. Family legend states that our Brodies were from Scotland but I have not found any evidence to back this up – so far. Any help would be greatly appreciated Regards, Jo

When I was younger I used to visit every year all my relatives in Gib...many names of relations are, Carruana,Cardonna,Pratt,Cassiaro annd pereira...to name a few.Now ofcourse as a youngster, one doesnt delve into family trees too much but since my mothers death some 11 years ago and my grandfather in the 1990's (my maternal grandmother died of cancer when i was about 8yrs)...I have lost links and would like to find out more about my roots as I have a strong sense of my gibraltarian roots . I am aware that many of my older relatives have since passed away eg my grandmothr had 4 sisters...fenny(francesca)...conchita pratt, ,olga (saunders),and antonia cardonna.......my grandfather had many brothers and sisters, some who i believe may have gone to argentina late 1890's or early 20th century....i know very little of this side of my family and i believe that the Bishop is related to my mother via the olivero side....In fact I have books which the Bishop wrote and signed to my mother from him, many years ago. Perhaps one of my grandfathers sisters married into the carruana family? Well,i would be so grateful for any information...please feel free to contact me anytime...uk 01795-410422 or email... many thanks, maria terisa annand

Comments: My name is Julie, and my mother’s name was Norah Evelyn Shergold, I am trying to find out about her mother’s family. Agnes Michaela Baker born 1893, married my grandfather William John Shergold in Gibraltar in 1918. My grandfather was a Royal marine, and in 1920 on finishing his Marine service he joined the Port Police where he was responsible for checking incoming vessels and visitors. He died in 1938 and his funeral was a very grand occasion with the coffin being carried on a gun carriage. The photos show that the streets were crowded and the shops closed, and the ships in harbour had flags at half mast. So he was much loved and well respected. My mother and her mother moved back to England to be with his family shortly after this. And my grandmother died before I myself was born. My mother also died 11 years ago. I have recently inherited some old photos which has led me to trying to trace my grandmothers family. I believe her father moved the family to Gibraltar sometime between 1897 and 1914. His name was Richard Joseph Baker c.1863 and his wife was Emily Elizabeth Baker ( nee Bussell) c.1868. When Agnes was born in Portsmouth his occupation was a Brass Moulder in the dockyard. I am unsure as to how many brothers or sisters Agnes had, but the 1891 census if correct, shows Richard J Baker c.1886, Alfred Baker c.1888 and Emily c.1890. My grandfather was shown as deceased at the time of my Grandparents marriage in 1918. Prior to my mother leaving Gibraltar in 1938, she got people to sign her autograph book and names that are there are. Alfred Baker, Richard J Baker, Lourdes Baker, Acacia Baker, Carlota Baker. In 1992 my mother was watching a program with Sir Harry Secombe recorded in Gibraltar. He was talking to the Mayor at that time who was a lady. And I gather my mother recognised her surname and wrote to her to ask if she knew someone my mother knew or was related to? The lady Mayor responded that she was an Aunt by marriage, and I gather that contact was made between them. Unfortunately none of this can be traced. I appreciate any assistance you could give me. Yours sincerely Julie Gines

Comments: Hi, I am researching CRESWELL AND CARVER families who lived in Gibraltar in some numbers from 1822 when Edmund Creswell and Susannah (need Drawbridge) arrived with their 7 children to set up home, while he established himself as Packet Agent and later Postmaster there. His son Edmund succeeded him as Postmaster General, and then Edmund's sister Margaret (Maggie). Would you know of any archives which would show photographs of them or their many children and grandchildren, or newspaper clippings? Edmund II was editor of the Gibraltar Chronicle for several years, I think. Our grandfather was one of Edmund I's sons: Thomas Creswell who married Martha Carver, and they traded in wines and other goods; and we are still in touch with some of the other descendants. Many of them were buried in the Sandpits Cemetary, but I think that this no longer exists? We area coming to Gibraltar at the end of April, so I am hoping we may be able to locate things to see or research while there. Can you help? Hoping for news Regards Carrie and Andrew Creswell.

Comments: Hi Lionel, I just found out today that my great grandparents were married on Gibralter in 1889. They were called Rosa Hermida and Robert MacDonald (although I think it should have been McDonald). Anyway they had a son William Ross McDonald and there was always a mystery about where he was born - and today I assume that it was Gibralter. They moved back to Scotland but unfortunately William's marriage split up and left 6 children going off in a variety of directions. Dad grew up in Quarrier Homes in Scotland with little knowledge of where he came from apart from knowing that his granny was maybe Spanish. So, I would like to confirm that William was born on Gibralter and wondered if any other members of the family. Help would be much appreciated. I tried to post this on the website but had some difficulties - sorry. Ishbel McDonald from Argyll in Scotland Thanks

REPLY:

Ishbel, I am sorry I did not make myself clear enough. The Mormon church are the LDS Records from Salt Lake City, USA, they provide their services world wide. "Disregard that part". What I did was check the Hermida name within the Gibraltar Catholic records that I have and did not find any information on that particular name. St Andrew's Church of Scotland, Gibraltar, has a CD with all their records for 40pounds that might have what you are looking for. I believe they ship world-wide. Check out the link below for details. http://www.scotskirkgibraltar.com/ Let me know how you do. Good luck, Lionel

Europa Road skeleton
SIMON PARKES LINK RULED OUT

By Brian Reyes
Detectives have ruled out any link between the Europa Road skeleton and missing sailor Simon Parkes, who vanished in Gibraltar in 1986.

Although from the outset investigating officers had thought it highly unlikely that that these were the remains of the young English sailor, they had kept all options open.
As a matter of courtesy, they had even contacted colleagues in the Hampshire Constabulary who worked closely with the Royal Gibraltar Police in the search for the sailor’s body.
But after painstaking work on the bones and close scrutiny of the Parkes case file, detectives are now certain that the Europa Road skeleton is someone else.
“We’ve been able to confirm this is not Simon Parkes,” an RGP spokesman said, adding that the conclusion was based on corroboration between physical and medical evidence.
Work at the scene of the find on a building site near Europa Road was coming to an end on Friday.
The area has been sealed off as a possible crime scene since workers found the bones while building garages behind private homes.
Forensics experts and archaeologists have carried meticulous work, scraping away layers of soil and dirt to uncover and document the bones.
Alongside the remains they have also found a number of buttons believed to be of military origin.
Although the excavation at the site will conclude shortly, the work will continue to try and date the bones and trace the person’s identity.
Although police are keeping an open mind, one theory gaining weight is that the skeleton has some link to the nearby Royal Naval Hospital.
But the investigation has also involved a trawl through files in search of unsolved cases involving missing persons.
A senior officer said there were at least four such cases, though three of those persons had been reported lost at sea.
The fourth case involves a young English soldier who went missing in strange circumstances in 1962.
Private Colin Luke vanished after telling close pals that he was going to swim from Little Bay to Eastern Beach. He was never seen again.
His case came to light after colleagues who served with him in Gibraltar contacted the Chronicle after reading reports of the Europa Road skeleton.
He said Private Luke’s disappearance had been a great loss to their regiment and that he and his fellow soldiers had long sought answers to the mystery.
However police in Gibraltar are handling the case with extreme caution and have not drawn any link to any missing person.
They say it is too early to draw any conclusions and are wary of raising anyone’s hopes.

Europa Road skeleton
EXPERTS STUDY BUTTONS IN ATTEMPT TO IDENTIFY REMAINS

By Brian Reyes
Detectives investigating the Europa Road skeleton have sent buttons found next to the bones to the UK for specialist analysis. Archaeologists helping police believe the buttons may be of military origin. If they are right, tracing the regiment could help narrow the scope of the investigation and provide investigators with vital clues as they try to piece together the dead person’s background. Officers are also trawling through files to locate unsolved missing persons cases and will conduct DNA tests if this is deemed appropriate at any stage in the investigation. However police have adopted a slow and meticulous approach to the investigation. They are wary at this stage of linking the skeleton to any individual case. So far investigators have ruled out any connection to missing sailor Simon Parkes, who disappeared in Gibraltar in 1986. They said physical evidence on the bones did not match medical information in police files on the case. One case which officers have not yet ruled out is that of an English soldier who vanished under strange circumstances in 1962. Private Colin Luke went missing after telling close pals that he was going to swim from Little Bay to Eastern Beach. He was never seen again.

His grandmother was Louisa Sanz who married george higman in the 1930s at the Methodist Church Gibraltar. During the war they moved to england for safety and never went back. I have been in contact with the methodist church who were very helpful but told me that there were no more records for sanz in their register and suggested that maybe the Catholic church might help. Does anyone know about catholic records in Gibraltar? I would be so grateful of any help I can get. Thank you

Comments: I am trying to research my family, Hepper, who were in Gibraltar from around 1800 to at least the 1930s. My great grandfather, James Albert Hepper was born in 1839 to Richard and Mary (nee Bowe) Hepper and came to England c 1855 to get an engineering education and joined the Royal Engineers. His children all based in England and served in the army in all round the world. My uncle used to visit 'unt Constance' a neice of Albert's when travelling to the middle east in the 1930s. The family lived at Bracebridge House, Prince Edward's Drive in the 1840s and Albert went to school at Pitman's in Pitman's Alley. Both these streets survive I believe but I don't know about the houses. . I am particularly interested to know whether any of the Heppers survive in Gibraltar? What Richard Hepper's occupation was in the 1840s 1850s. I believe it was 'merchant' but what of? Anything about the Bowes - Mary Anne Bowe married Richard Hepper in 1834. I would be grateful if you could put me in touch with a Gibraltar based genealogist who could help me with these questions. Richard's father James Heper came to Gibraltar c 1800 from Leeds in Yorkshire. I look forward to hearing from you. Edward Hepper 61 Queens Road, Alton Hants GU34

Comments: I wish to know how to obtain Marriage Certificates, Birth Certificates etc, and link this information up to Millitary Records, in Gibraltar. In 1840, Salisbury UK, John Langtry was born. He joined the Kings Lifeguards, went to India and then settled in Gibraltar, marrying Mary Bossio (date unknown). They had William (1864 in Canada), Albert (1866), Sarah (1868), Henry (1870), Frank (1872), John (1873), Emily (1874). We are unsure whether all the children were born in Canada - but we do know that all the children returned to Gibraltar - the birthplace of their Mother. All but Sarah, then emigrated to Argentina. Sarah married William James Brunt, we think in Gibtaltar (1892). She had seven children, of whom John Brunt (1904) was my grandfather. Sarah and her family seem to have travelled the World and returned to Gibtaltar, after the death of William James in 1905. I have loads of info regarding the Langtry family but I am struggling to find Marriage Certificates for Mary and John and Sarah and William. I am planning to bring my Mother to Gibraltar in October and would love to find out as much info as I can before we get there. I am also trying to trace Matthews mother Catalena LOPEZ SUFF, a former nun born in Igualeja, Spain. She married my great great grandfather, Daniel b.1838 in 1891. If anyone can give me details concerning these two women and their families it would be much appreciated! Natalie

Comments: I am trying to trase the Shannon (or Ben Sha'nan) family in Gibraltar. I think they came over from Morocco in the 1740's then between 1767 and 1778 at least some of them moved to London. I have ordered from the LDS the 1777 Gibraltar census, but I wondered if anybody knows if the 1753 and 1767 Gibraltar censuses still exist? If so how I can either get copies or have someone look up my family in them? Thank you John

Additional Comments May 30th 2007: I have found a ancestor who is listed in the "List of Ihabitants'Houses 1778" as being in the area of " From the Moorish Castle to the S th (?south) Polygon. The Moorish Castle bit I get, but I cannot find on any of the old maps (1750, 1780 & 1785) any mention of Polygons, south or otherwise. Does anyone have any suggestions? On another subject does anyone know if the 1767 & 1753 censuses are still around, if so where could I find them? Many Thanks John

Comments: Hi Everyone Just wanted to say don't give up! I have at long last had a response from King's Chapel. No news yet, but my four e-mails have been forwarded to their archivist who works part-time. So hopefully I will hear something definite soon. Thought this would encourage all those who are waiting for a response.

Comments: Searching for the birth record of WILLIAM LEDGER who was a British subject born in Gibraltar 1808-1811. His family were from Limerick in Ireland, which was of course part of Britain at that time. William graduated from Trinity College Dublin in the 1830's and he became a poet and author. He married Sarah Finucane c1830. They were my GGGgrandparents. All my Gibraltar enquiries so far have been in vain. Have written four times to King's Chapel since November 2006 but received no reply whatsoever. Any help or advice would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

Comments: I?d be grateful for help and advice about how to find a birth or baptismal record for William Thomas Wiggins, born 1836-1837 in Gibraltar. He was the son of another William Thomas Wiggins whose profession was given on his son?s marriage record as Corporal Royal Artillery. Presumably if wife and child were present, his father must have been stationed for some time on Gibraltar. Or possibly he married there. Or possibly the child came into the world in irregular fashion. The family appears to have been Anglican. So far as I can tell, the LDS library does not hold Anglican baptismal records for 1836-1837. Do they exist? Are they accessible? Many thanks for your help, and best wishes to you.

Comments: My ancestor Joseph Whalley who was born in Liverpool about 1825 was the captain of a ship and worked for the British Merchant Navy. He emigrated from Glasgow with his wife Jane (Campbell) Whalley and son also Joseph Whalley. The daughter Jane and her husband Andrias Paulesen (known as Andrew Paulesen) also went to live in Gibraltar about the same time. Andrias was also a ship captain and worked for the Merchant Navy. They went to live in Gibraltar about 1870. The above father died on board Hulk Ship No 51 and his wife died on board Hulk Ship No 29. Both in Gibraltar Bay. The son Joseph lived in Crutchett?s Ramp and married a girl from Paradise Ramp in Gibraltar, Harriet Beatrice Costerton. She was born in Manchester. At this time Joseph was working for Coal Merchants ?Cory Brothers?, a welsh company which had a coaling station in Gib. He worked as an agent. About 1905 the above couple, their children and Jane and Andrias Paulesen all returned to Glasgow. I would be interested in finding out any information about the company ?Cory Brothers? in Gibraltar. Also in what the flats in Crutchett?s Ramp are like inside e.g. photos. I?ve visited Gibraltar several times. The main cemetery in Gibraltar is the North Front Cemetery for anyone who?s interested. It is very big and has different areas. The Presbyterian Area is at the back and is quite overgrown. It runs along the side of the airport runway. The telephone number I have for the cemeteries department is: (350) 78491 or (350) 52691. The last time I was in Gibraltar the Cemetery keepers office was open but no one was
