Pugsley Family

The Pugsley family can be traced back for more than 250 years in Devonshire, England. I have run across two main traditions for the origin of the family name, I leave it up to you which one you want to believe, if any at all.

The first says the Pugsleys came over with William the Conqueror as members of the minor nobility, the Norman name being De Pugge. This is of course if you want to be members of the nobility. The other tradition claims the name is of Welsh origin, being derived from Ap Hugh.

Supposedly the first Pugsley?s to arrive in the New World were Matthew and his brother James. They settled in Pelham Manor (now part of the town of Pelham, NY) about 1680. I have no idea at this time if this branch of the family is directly descended from these brothers, but the chances are relatively good that it is.
