The Common Blue Violet is a member of the Violet Family (Violaceae) and is found blooming in damp wood, moist meadows and roadsides from March to June.

When I was a child, my favorite spring pastime was picking the Johnny-Jump-Ups that grew in the woods behind my home. The carpeted the ground with a think layer of purple that was so very lovely. Maybe that is why purple is one of my very favorite colors.

These flowers have the usual 5 petals, the lower one being longer and spurred. The color is blue to white and the leaves are hart-shapped and grow on the same stalk as the flower.

This plant grows throughout the continential United States.
