"First of all, I belived I was asked why PD2 was not announced at E3. The reason is it simply wasn't to the point it the team felt it was acceptable to show. After the completion of PD the team dispursed to work on other projects, and PD2 was pushed to the wayside and put on hold. With newer projects such as Donkey Kong Racing and Dinosaur Planet nearing completion, they require less and less people working on them. Employees start to wander off and work on other projects, such as PD2. As I'm sure you all know, PD is basicly the GE engine optimised to take advantage of the N64 Expansion Pack. Rather than just optimising again for the GC, the team is completely re-scripting half of the code. And what isn't be re-written, is being optimised and upgraded. Since the engine is in a "disassembled" state, it is not really playable, and thus secret for a bit longer. You know how Rare is, always likes thier stuff to be in tip-top condition for the public.
Also some may have noticed a small joke in a "Scribes" section on the Rareware website. Someone said "There is a 50% chance Joanna may not be in PD2". This was a hint disguised as a joke. According to my friend after the first mission a certain Agent is kidnapped and the player plays as a certain other agent to rescue her. That's what that was all about, of course, when the brass at Rare found out, he caught hell and glossed over the statement the with the "Since PD2 is either unfinished or non-existant..." rubbish.
So, in any event, Game Mechanics eh? Well, since the GC controller includes several additional buttons (AKA: X and Y) several new functions have been added. Like quick Cloaking and Uncloaking. Rather than finding it on the pause menu on pulling it out as a weapon, simply tap one of the nifty new buttons, and it done. Also, no jumping I'm afraid. Rare think it would detract from the gameplay somehow. Sorry. Also, if you have two guns out, you can fire them each separately via the R and L buttons. Oh, and they have added a really cool option that's sort of akin to perfect darkness for multiplayer. the lights can "strobe" on and off. It has three settings; Constant, Irregular, and Music. Constant in a steady on, off, on, off. Irregular is a random time between intervals. Music is where they go off and on in time with the music. Pretty cool eh?"
UPDATED 1 JUNE, 2001:
According to the info, a Particle System has been added to the game engine. That means things like realistic sparks and whatnot. Also, bullets can now ricochet off certain surfaces.
In other news, PD2 will almost certainly be officially announced at Space World this summer. The reason for this is that PD2 was first glimpsed at Space World last year through a short demo, and the team thought the it was fitting to reveal the game there this year.
UPDATED 2 JUNE, 2001:
As for cameos, expect the whole CI gang, as well as the occasional appearence from Elvis. Beyond that, I'm not sure.
As to guns, all PD and GE guns will be included. To my knowledge, there are only a handfull of new guns, but many of the PD guns have been upgraded and improved upon.
A thing about Chesluk Industries: Chesluk Industries is a dummy company that CI uses to release some of it's weapons. In fact, if you look at the computer screen in the weapons room where the guy is typing, occasionally "Chesluk" flashes on the screen. This acctually plays a minor role in PD2.
It's hard to create good sniping levels in a game I do however know about a level in PD2 that was designed with this in mind. You need to get into a heavily fortified building, so they drop you on the roof of the building accross the road with a sniper rifle. You take out all the ground guards and the ones in the watchtowers, then slip down the fire escape to the ground and enter the building and get into a shoot-out before the level is over.
UPDATED 6 JUNE, 2001:
Online play? Of course! Rare is taking advantage of all the Gamecube's assets. Multiplayer? Hmmm, that's a tough one. About all I can say is to expect more interaction with the arena enviroment. For example, drone guns, and the like.
Well, Co-Op and Counter-Op will return in an almost unchanged format. Movies? Well, they watch most of the same ones you guys do; like the Matrix, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, The Care bears; so expect to see some movie inspired levels and effects (well, maybe not care bears). Music will be original compositions just like PD. As to "vehicles" there will be a version of the Hover bike, a Tank-like thing, and another I can't mention (Hint, Hint) as far as I know, only the bike is in multi at the moment. Here's a juicy little tid-bit for you; an automatic rifle, with it's second function as a shotgun.
Fire/Flames? Well, the Gamecube is much better at handeling Combustion effects and the like, so there will be much better explosions. As to flames themselves, ummm... some stuff will burn when blasted with the flamethrower (see below), but that's really just a explosion with less smoke, so, yes and no.
Flamethrower? Yes (see above).
New death animations? Ummm, I would imagine they would make some new ones, but I don't know for sure, so don't quote me on it. And that's a definite NO on the blown off limbs. The ESRB would have a cow over that one.
Ummm, I'm not sure when the online play network will be ready, but I do know that PD2 will take advantage of it when it is. As to Stack, I heard Rare was talking to MGM (who own the rights to Bond) about useing some of the Bond levels, but nothing is certain yet. The Password? I'm not allowed to say anything about that other than it will be connected to PD2 Multiplayer.
UPDATED 7 JUNE, 2001:
Sadly, face-mapping won't be brought back, however, there will be some GBA connectivity.
Rare has looked closely at character editors in other games, and is gathering all the coolest feature's for PD2, also, (hehe, I love giving out these bits) there is a code to let you use your multi character in single player. A level editor is currently under consideration.
Guns will have second functions, but not third. (Don't you remember how hard it was to memorize just two for every gun?) The enemy AI is being totally revamped for the more powerfull GC. New simulants? The only one I can think of at the moment is, he mentioned something about a civilian sim.
Well, the GE guns do have some reload animation.
The hit detection has been stepped up to an unbeliveable level. Guards will hold injured limbs, stagger backwards with the force of a hit, fall on the ground and crawl towards the alarm, the list goes on... Although they have tried to keep the amount of actual blood about on par with PD, after all, blood isn't what the game's about.
The storyline is much better and more realistic.
As you know, Rare is a master of small details, expect to see lots of little cool things like "gangstah" style shooting.
The final number of multiplayer levels is hard to say because the game isn't finished yet, currently, there are about 30 planned.
A keyboard? I honestly don't know.
I looked up Metal Gear Solid 2, and when I saw the screenshots, I laughed, and laughed, and laughed. Perfect Dark 2 has far superior graphics, even in it's early state.
UPDATED 10 JUNE, 2001:
OK, Yes, more than one boss. I don't think so on the kicking. I don't know about you, but when someone's on a mission, I can't see it happening that they're gonna stand around and play pinball. You know in PD when you have a 3 person multi game, and there's that one quarter of the sreen that's just black and useless? Well, never again with PD2, Rare is adding a "Security Camera" to a high-traffic area in each arena, the camera view will be displayed in the unused portion of the screen.
More Characters? Well, I know Rare is going to try and cram as much as they can into the game, so maybe.
Stealth will be much more necessary in PD2.
Yes, sometimes there are suprise objectives, and secret ones too. On a side note, I regretfully have never played TWINE, I keep meaning to rent it, but I never seem to get around to it.
I don't know of any new multi scenarios as of yet, and the only option I can think of is the much needed "Number of lives".
How many simulants? At least eight, maybe more, the game isn't finished yet, so I don't know how many the GC can handle.
How many online players? Once again, I don't know. Sorry.
Teamwork? One thing they wanted to with PD was make the multi challanges more like solo missions for a team. Unfortunately, due to time and space restrictions, this didn't happen. but PD2 will be much more refined.
Realistic accuracy? When you run, your gun wobbles around, so yes.
New Items? Items are mainly level orientated (ie: security cards) so, I don't know much about the items.
Have I actually played the game? Well, no. I haven't PLAYED it persay, but I have seen many a screenshot and movies. The rest I get from my friend. Unfourtunately I cannot post any screenshots, or I would be cut-off by my friend (who I imagine would no longer be my friend).
Sequal or Prequal? Finally a question I can answer! Neither. The game is technically a sequal, because it is based after PD, but much of the play takes place in the past.
Website interactivity? Probably not.
Yes! Hats will make a come back!
The enemy AI will be vastly improved. Rare is also working on the Facial animation thing.
And yes, you acctually punch :)
Estimated Control Style:
R+L=aim/fire
B= open doors, reload
A= switch guns
Z= fire
X+Y= one activates the cloaking device, the other is a mystery
Stick= move
D Pad+C Stick= strafe, look up/down
Almost identical to PD eh? (Then again, why mess with a good thing?)
Some walls can be destroyed.
No visible blood splattering.
No bullets through walls. (Although the glass floor thing from the Grid will be returning)
Lots more objects like chairs and whatnot.
No throwing stars to my knowledge.
Yes, IR goggles in multi.
Yes, you can see laser sights from others.
UPDATED 1 AUGUST, 2001:
I have been informed that Rare WILL indeed be unveiling PD2 at Spaceworld this August. Finally, the waiting for some official information will be over. The Level-Editor is coming along beautifully, and will most likely be showcased along with the Mission-Editor. Also, Multiplayer Characters can be fully customised. Including such features as: Height, Weight, Clothing, Head, Hats, Sunglasses, and other such paraphernalia. Also, the storyline has been solidified somewhat during my "vacation". It seems that a certain CI star agent goes missing during an extremely delicate mission. The Institute is curious, and send in another agent after the first. The would-be rescuer discovers evidence that points to time travel. The Institite sends the the agent back in time to rescue the missing agent in the past.
UPDATED 4 AUGUST, 2001:
It turns out that PD2 will not only just be coming to the GC. That's right, PD will have a GBA incarnation as well. Fierce debates raged at Rare HQ as weather to flood the market with another FPS, or to make it more similar to PD for the GBC. Eventually a compromise was struck, PDA (Perfect Dark Advance) will be a FPS, however it will be an entirely separate game form PD2. Also, rather than flooding the market, Rare is holding back and making PDA a second generation game, This will undoubtedly show in both quality of graphics, and gameplay. It should be released a few months after PD2.
UPDATED 8 AUGUST, 2001:
PD2 features more "real world" locations. Such as the leaning tower of Piza, for example. A plethora of entirely new weapons such as the KR5 sub-machine gun. And what game
would be complete without the mighty Throwing Star?
And many Multi-Missions are tailored to teamwork. Such as the one in which you are
assigned to evacuate a post office that has been taken hostage. Although you must
not simply take out the Gun-men in a crowded room, but also escort the victims outside
without alerting the Gun-men in other rooms.
Which leads to my next snippet of info: Players will be able to utilize the GC modem
and download new outfits for their Multi Characters.
UPDATED 14 AUGUST 2001
I have a fragment or two of further info. Downloads are not limited simply to Multi-Characters, but you can also nab spiffy new wall textures, Objects, and even entire Multi-Levels.
Furthermore, I have become aware of a rather inventive idea on Rare's behalf. During a large outdoor level (something akin to GE's "Surface") some enemies literally fall from the sky,with parachutes that is. Appearently mid way through the level a group of paratroopers takes it upon themselves to (try to) take you out. Of course, you can avoid this with some fancy shooting by "ventilating" their parachutes whilst they are still in the air (yet another opportunity for the sniper).
Well, anyways, as least I thought it was neat.
